Ultimate Buying Guide: How to Choose the Right Picture Frame

learn about wood (4)

Choosing the right size for solid wood picture frames is crucial to ensure that the frame complements the artwork or photo and fits well within the intended space. Here are some tips on selecting the right size for your solid wood picture frames.

How to choose the right picture frame

Consider the Artwork

Take into account the dimensions and proportions of the artwork or photo you want to frame. The frame should enhance the visual impact of the piece without overwhelming it.

Matting and Borders

If you plan to use matting around the artwork, consider how much space it will take up within the frame. Matting can add a border around the artwork, and the combined dimensions of the mat and artwork will influence the frame size.

Proportions and Balance

Aim for a balanced look. Consider the size of the wall where the framed piece will be displayed. A small frame on a large wall may look lost, while an oversized frame in a small space can be overpowering.

Room Size and Placement

Take into account the size of the room and the wall where you plan to hang the framed artwork. Larger rooms may accommodate larger frames, while smaller spaces might require more modest sizes.

Grouping Frames

If you plan to create a gallery wall or display multiple frames together, consider the arrangement and spacing between frames. Frames of similar sizes or a cohesive arrangement can create a harmonious look.

Furniture Placement

Consider the placement of furniture near the framed artwork. The frame size should work well with the surrounding furniture and not feel out of place.

Eye Level

Hang the frame at eye level for optimal viewing. The center of the artwork should be at approximately eye level, which is around 57 to 60 inches from the floor.

Aspect Ratio

Pay attention to the aspect ratio of the artwork. If the piece has a specific aspect ratio (width to height ratio), try to find a frame with a similar ratio to avoid distortion.

Personal Preference

Ultimately, your personal taste and preferences play a significant role. Consider the visual impact you want to achieve and choose a frame size that resonates with your aesthetic sensibilities.

What is the difference between with mat and no mat

With Mat vs. No Mat

Whether you choose a mat or no mat, both options offer gorgeous possibilities with endless flexibility. Additionally, our inclusion of an extra smaller mat allows you to seamlessly switch between styles, adapting to the unique requirements of your artwork.

With Mat

Adding a mat behind smaller pieces provides valuable spatial effects, creating a clean border that allows the artwork to shine.
Larger prints also benefit from mats, offering a refined appeal. We offer beige mats for a clean and timeless artistic sensibility, ensuring durability with acid-free materials.
The versatility of beige mats complements changing palettes and room décor over time. Mats contribute to the overall finished frame size, so consider this when arranging your image in your chosen space.

No Mat

Opting for a full-bleed framed print, without a mat, brings profound visual benefits, especially for larger prints with expansive landscapes.
This option adds intensity and cinematic allure to your artwork. While larger pieces can still accommodate a mat, we recommend a narrower mat in proportion to the overall size. A gallery wall can look fantastic with a mix of matted and full-bleed framed styles or a cohesive choice of one or the other.

Choosing the Right Size

Our option size reflects the internal size of the frame, making it easier for you to find the perfect fit.

If you prefer a frame with no mat, simply select the same size frame as your photo. For instance, if you have a 4×6 inches photo, choose the 4×6 inches frame for a seamless look.

If matting is your preference, opt for a larger frame, such as the 6×8 inches size (refer to our size guide below).

01.

Choose Your Art Size

You've got a stunning 11x14" piece of art, but unfortunately, we don't have an exact match in our pre-made frames. No worries! This is where custom matting comes into play.

02.

Opt for a Custom Mat

To enhance your artwork and provide it with the perfect fit, we recommend opting for a custom mat. This ensures a tailored look that accentuates your art while offering a professional touch.

03.

Select the Ideal Frame Size

Now, the question arises – which frame size should you choose? For an 11x14" artwork, we suggest selecting a frame that leaves at least one inch of matting on each side. This not only enhances the visual appeal but also adds a touch of sophistication.

04.

Best Frame Option

For your 11x14" artwork, the frame size would be at least 13×16", and the ideal frame size in our shop would be 16x20". This allows for a balanced and aesthetically pleasing presentation, with ample space around the artwork to let it shine.
